THIS BLOG is NOW RETIRED

I began this blog in May 2009 following the death of Marcia Powell at Perryville State Prison in Goodyear, Arizona. It is not intended to prescribe the path that leads to freedom from the prison industrial complex.

Rather, these are just my observations in arguably the most racist, fascist, militaristic state in the nation at a critical time in history for a number of intersecting liberation movements. From Indigenous resistance to genocidal practices, to the fight over laws like SB1070 and the ban on Ethnic Studies, Arizona is at the center of many battles for human rights, and thus the struggle for prison abolition as well - for none are free until all are. I retired the blog in APRIL 2013.

David Rovics: We Are Everywhere

To my fellow activists now struggling through life - let this be a reminder that you are not alone and that we desperately need you here. All the injustice, grief, war, and human suffering calls for us to stay and do everything we can about it - you can't help us anymore when you're gone. Don't give up the fight - your last shred of hope may just keep someone else alive, too.

Sheriff Joe still runs amok: Indict him already.

Interesting interview with our favorite local fascist at yesterday's workplace raid by Carlos Galindo. Great to know that while the murders and other serious crimes continue to go unsolved in Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio is working hard arresting the most marginalized, exploited people in the country for contributing to the Social Security savings of their victims and supporting their own impoverished families back home by showing up faithfully to work every day.

Some of those he rounded up will also be convicted of conspiring to smuggle themselves, no doubt - and warehoused at great expense in our jails and prisons
until we decide to deport them (the AZ Department of Corrections alone incarcerates nearly 2,500 "criminal aliens" for non-violent offenses at about $20,000 each/year). That'll teach them for working hard in America for slave wages instead of outright stealing from the most vulnerable, like these employers do.

Why did we go the extra mile to criminalize the poorest of the working poor again? Oh yeah - so Americans who were shut out of higher education and lost their homes (thanks to the 8 years of Republican reign) can have the great jobs we've been offering migrants all this time (I can't believe how many people fall for that stuff. It's just more of the same manipulation of the workforce by the elite that's always gone on here).

Note how despite six months of investigations, Sheriff Joe still doesn't seem to know if the owner of this business followed procedures for verifying employee documentation - guess that guy isn't going to jail over all this: he must be a Real American. What a drag to be caught being suckered by so many clever criminals at once. Alien ones, at that.

For those who missed it, Carlos was the main organizer behind the PHX PD demonstrations a few weeks ago over the murder of Danny Rodriguez. Catch him on
Youtube for more AZ coverage that mainstream media too often misses, and on Saturday mornings 9-11 at 1010 AM Radio (or hit www.carlosgalindo.com).

Thanks for all the work you do, Carlos.
