THIS BLOG is NOW RETIRED

I began this blog in May 2009 following the death of Marcia Powell at Perryville State Prison in Goodyear, Arizona. It is not intended to prescribe the path that leads to freedom from the prison industrial complex.

Rather, these are just my observations in arguably the most racist, fascist, militaristic state in the nation at a critical time in history for a number of intersecting liberation movements. From Indigenous resistance to genocidal practices, to the fight over laws like SB1070 and the ban on Ethnic Studies, Arizona is at the center of many battles for human rights, and thus the struggle for prison abolition as well - for none are free until all are. I retired the blog in APRIL 2013.

David Rovics: We Are Everywhere

To my fellow activists now struggling through life - let this be a reminder that you are not alone and that we desperately need you here. All the injustice, grief, war, and human suffering calls for us to stay and do everything we can about it - you can't help us anymore when you're gone. Don't give up the fight - your last shred of hope may just keep someone else alive, too.

Fascist v Fascist: Arpaio to enter GOP Gubernatorial Primary

As reported in the Phoenix New Times, Friday.

Now, before anyone freaks out about this, keep in mind the following:

There are hundreds, if not thousands of civil rights lawsuits stacking up against Arpaio and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, and settlements - which are reportedly close - will almost certainly demand that Arpaio resign immediately. We are not putting up with him for two more years, that's for sure.

There will probably also be some kind of gag order, so he can make it look like he's really resigning to run for higher office, not because he was pushed out of current office due to incompetency, bigotry, and violations of civil rights laws.
Hence this foolish campaign in which he will simply waste more people's money.

Let me repeat the important part of that last bit again: Sheriff Joe Arpaio has VIOLATED a multitude of civil rights LAWS and constitutional standards. That makes him a LAWBREAKER. Just because he isn't being criminally prosecuted yet, doesn't mean he didn't break the law - and I have no doubt that his management of the county jail has been criminally negligent, considering how people have been dying in there. Hopefully, he will first become the GOP gubernatorial candidate, and THEN get indicted.

Therefore, for all those of you who think this clown might really become Arizona's next governor, think again. The AZ GOP and all their pollsters haven't even talked to more than 1000 people here, while tens of thousands have been demonstrating and resisting in numerous ways. Gallup, Rasmussen, CNN - all of them are clearly pretty clueless about where the rest of us are - that's because we're off the radar, away from our phones, and in the streets.

We are not ceding our state to fascists without a fight - Latino, Indigenous, Asian, Middle Eastern, black, and white Americans alike - people of all backgrounds - will resist and fight back until we reclaim Arizona from the moneyed, elitist, racist few who would enslave, imprison or leave the rest of us to die in the desert if it might somehow profit them.

So, shove that one up your polls, American Media. The tide of resistance, of real democracy, is rising in Arizona. The reign of men like Arpaio, Pearce, and Kavanagh is quickly coming to an end - expedited by their own extremism...Arpaio running for governor will simply expose the corrupted soul of the Arizona Republican Party for what it is - and then maybe they'll begin to purge their fascists and pay more attention to serving the People of this land.

Reporting live from Phoenix, Arizona, my new home town, this is the Prison Abolitionist.
