I began this blog in May 2009 following the death of Marcia Powell at Perryville State Prison in Goodyear, Arizona. It is not intended to prescribe the path that leads to freedom from the prison industrial complex.

Rather, these are just my observations in arguably the most racist, fascist, militaristic state in the nation at a critical time in history for a number of intersecting liberation movements. From Indigenous resistance to genocidal practices, to the fight over laws like SB1070 and the ban on Ethnic Studies, Arizona is at the center of many battles for human rights, and thus the struggle for prison abolition as well - for none are free until all are. I retired the blog in APRIL 2013.

Minneapolis Food Not Bombs Activist Arrest

From the Food Not Bombs Network, re the arrest of Raymond Merchant:

Food Not Bombs activist in jail in Minneapolis! Help needed!
Date:    Thu, November 5, 2009 11:22 am

Please help get Twin Cities artist and activist out of jail!

Our friend, Raymond Merchant aka AC, father of two, Hip Hop artist, and community organizer in Minneapolis was recently wrongly arrested in relation to a robbery in South Minneapolis to which he was no party. Missing for several days, friends became worried when Raymond failed to arrive to a show he was scheduled to perform at. After contacting his family, it was confirmed he had been abducted by police just blocks from his home while out for a walk.

Raymond cooks and distributes food through Minneapolis Food Not Bombs, a group that came under heat last year as the Food Not Bombs House was raided and subsequently condemned by police in the week leading up to the Republican National Convention. Help us fight to get Raymond out of jail as he is facing potential prison time resulting from the police pinning bogus charges on him. The full charges and maximum penalty are as of yet unknown though we know he is being charged with three felonies. He is currently being held on a $50,000 bail with $5,000 bond, but it is our hope and intention that he will not have to sit in jail until his first court date on November 16th. He has been in custody since October 24th.

Fight with us as we stand up to support Raymond, and end police repression!
