I began this blog in May 2009 following the death of Marcia Powell at Perryville State Prison in Goodyear, Arizona. It is not intended to prescribe the path that leads to freedom from the prison industrial complex.

Rather, these are just my observations in arguably the most racist, fascist, militaristic state in the nation at a critical time in history for a number of intersecting liberation movements. From Indigenous resistance to genocidal practices, to the fight over laws like SB1070 and the ban on Ethnic Studies, Arizona is at the center of many battles for human rights, and thus the struggle for prison abolition as well - for none are free until all are. I retired the blog in APRIL 2013.

Anti-War Vigil: Troop Escalation Imminent

From the End the War Coalition: stay tuned to the news...

Please widely circulate this announcement!

Emergency Community Response
The Day After President Obama Announces a Troop Escalation in Afghanistan!!!
(except if the announcement is on a Saturday, for which we will respond the following Monday)

Time:  Beginning at 4:30 p.m. the day after the announcement (or on Monday, if it is announced on Saturday.)
If a Friday annoucement beginning at 10:00 a.m Saturday.

Where: The intersection of 24th Street and Camelback, Phoenix.

What:  A Tug of Warfare (at a cost of one million dollar per year to keep one soldier or 40 billion for 40,000 more soldiers in Afghanistan for a year) versus Healthcare in the intersection.  Bannering.  Possibly visiting Senator Kyl’s Office at 22nd Street and Camelback.

Candlelight Vigil starting around 5:30 p.m.

Bring: candles, signs opposing the Afghanistan escalation and where you believe our money could be better used, drums and other musical instruments. If you have one, wear your "War is Costly, Peace is Priceless" t-shirt.

Why: Although we do not know the exact day of the announcement, it is anticipated that President Obama in the very near future will be announcing a significant escalation of more troops sent to Afghanistan. Is that what you want?  Is that in the national interest?  Is that what our country needs?  If he announces a withdrawal we will have a community celebration.  We have to help make the change we want in the world.   Below is an alternative "no more troops to Afghanistan" announcement, drafted by Tom Englehartdt, that we would like President Obama to make.
