I began this blog in May 2009 following the death of Marcia Powell at Perryville State Prison in Goodyear, Arizona. It is not intended to prescribe the path that leads to freedom from the prison industrial complex.

Rather, these are just my observations in arguably the most racist, fascist, militaristic state in the nation at a critical time in history for a number of intersecting liberation movements. From Indigenous resistance to genocidal practices, to the fight over laws like SB1070 and the ban on Ethnic Studies, Arizona is at the center of many battles for human rights, and thus the struggle for prison abolition as well - for none are free until all are. I retired the blog in APRIL 2013.

Persecution and prosecution for political purposes

This came from a list-serve that will remain anonymous so the sender doesn't end up on Thomas' shit list (I will, instead...) But first, check out Accidental

Public Outcry in Arizona!  Daniel Horne is a courageous voice speaking out for all those who have been silenced in Arizona by those in power (arpaio, andrew thomas and their enablers)!  Daniel sums up why Arizona is sinking daily.  Mandatory minimum sentencing is the weapon they use to destroy -- for a political agenda-- a sick, perverted game.  Wake up Arizona!

Daniel Horne's comment in Stephen Lemon's blog in the Phoenix New Times is one of the most compelling and courageous comments about the reign of terror in Maricopa County, Arizona, under sheriff arpaio and most county attorney andrew thomas.  Families and children are very much at risk.  Daniel is replying to Geno, who had seen Daniel on Fox 10 Newsmaker Sunday with John Hook, this past Sunday. These truths should be at the heart of the next campaign.   We all appreciate Daniel's courage.  He also spoke at the Arizona Freedom March for the Wrongfully Convicted on June 27th.

From Dan Horne (the Accidental Felon - really, check out his website and book.):

...My book is primarily about the sheriff's human rights violations, but I feel that Andrew Thomas is a much more dangerous person to the people of Maricopa County of all races and all ages (yes children too are in the book.)

Arpaio is out in front of the cameras almost daily. Thomas does most of his dirty work in secret and the people who are victimized by him are kept quiet in prison for 10 years to life. Think of it this way, I see Apaio as standing in the road with a large club ready to attack you. He's out in the open. Thomas is hiding in the bushes with a snare ready to drag you into the brush so no one will ever know what happened to you. He uses Mandatory Minimum Sentencing as a weapon of mass destruction on the men, women and children of Maricopa County.

I estimate that Thomas alone is responsible for over 1/3 of the billion dollar budget deficit the state is struggling with now. Russell Pierce, Thomas and Arpaio are lunch buddies. Russell Pierce has sponsored a bill the Governor just vetoed that would sell all of Arizona prisons to the For-profit private prison industry for $495 mil. That's funny money because it would have to be paid back to those for-profit companies as bed rent.

Thomas seems bent on two plans in my estimation. One is to break the back of the state financially so that he can then claim mis-management by any current administration as a platform for higher office. The second is to use the people of Maricopa County as the nails in his efforts to build a political resume for himself to run for higher office. Think about it, you can't be a crime fighter unless you have a lot of dangerous crime now can you. With MMS, Thomas can literally manufacture all the dangerous crime he wants and turn ordinary citizens into violent felons and sexual predators. Almost everyone charged will plead guilty (as I did) because a.) MMS is extremely abusive and not intended to be used against the general public and b.) You'll be tried on the facts of one crime and charged with the sentence of another more serious crime.

John Hook asked me a good question and that was "What do you say to the people who say to you that if you keep your nose clean and stay out of trouble you have nothing to worry about?" There are people who have nothing to fear from Thomas and Arpaio. I would describe them as people who do not drink alcohol, do not take prescription medication, do not drive, and do not have children under the age of 21. The rest of us had better keep our eye on the bushes.

There's more, much more on my website: for anyone interested. I have a blog and social media accounts I update regularly too.
