THIS BLOG is NOW RETIRED

I began this blog in May 2009 following the death of Marcia Powell at Perryville State Prison in Goodyear, Arizona. It is not intended to prescribe the path that leads to freedom from the prison industrial complex.

Rather, these are just my observations in arguably the most racist, fascist, militaristic state in the nation at a critical time in history for a number of intersecting liberation movements. From Indigenous resistance to genocidal practices, to the fight over laws like SB1070 and the ban on Ethnic Studies, Arizona is at the center of many battles for human rights, and thus the struggle for prison abolition as well - for none are free until all are. I retired the blog in APRIL 2013.

David Rovics: We Are Everywhere

To my fellow activists now struggling through life - let this be a reminder that you are not alone and that we desperately need you here. All the injustice, grief, war, and human suffering calls for us to stay and do everything we can about it - you can't help us anymore when you're gone. Don't give up the fight - your last shred of hope may just keep someone else alive, too.

Criminal Aliens

This is an incredible website about the struggles of indigenous people everywhere: Intercontinental Cry. Resistance. The resistance never died; thank god for the liberation movements of the world.

I've decided to turn myself in as an illegal alien, by the way, if they don't get me first. Probably a criminal one. I'm saving it for a press release; maybe one as we approach Thanksgiving. Or during one of Arpaio's "crime suppression" sweeps. That would really upstage him...

Seriously. My ancestors were Pilgrims. William Bradford Pilgrims. We never did get permission: we just kind of invented our own birth certificates and citizenship papers after we slaughtered and enslaved everyone else. I think that's pretty criminal, and apparently in America the children are supposed to pay for the crimes of their parents. At least in Arizona, they are.

I can bring my mother's certificate of membership in the Mayflower Society as evidence of my family's crimes. Where will they send me if they decide to ship me "home"? I keep wondering that, and how it must be for a kid to grow up with always fearing someone will send them "home", having spent all their lives here.

So, that's my latest action plan. I think all Mayflower descendants should do that around the country this fall in solidarity with both indigenous and immigrant movements. Far from becoming immune, I keep waking up more sensitized to another morning in America, where we're still locking up people for being poor and persecuting the labor we enticed to come here in order to undercut union organizing. We've still got Leonard Peltier in prison for god's sake.

How many centuries have we been doing this? Where is it going to stop, if not here? How can we in good conscience pass this planet on to the next generation if we don't deal with this stuff now?

So, if you're descended from the Mayflower, you can be a criminal alien too. Just about anyone can fit into that category, now. Show them how absurd this is. It's not the non-citizen immigrants they need to worry about: it's the voting ones. It's a conspiracy, you know. We're descending on this place from all over the country as part of a radical left-wing agenda to throw Arizona into a Progressive trend, so we can take over the government, raise everyone's taxes, and seize all the guns...

That's not such a bad idea, you know?
